The best robot mower for a small lawn

The cheapest model that meets every requirement

Ecovacs GOAT O600 RTK, $1,099

If your lawn isn’t the one this list assumes, the answer changes: change it in the matcher.

A small suburban block usually means two patches of grass, front and back, joined by a path or a driveway, on a gentle grade. That rules out more mowers than size does: the mower has to map separate zones and reach both without a buried wire.

The case below is a modest front-and-back block with a mild slope and an open sky.

What it has to have

  • Rated for 400 m² or more. The maker's rated area is the most lawn it keeps cut; below that it falls behind in the growing season.
  • Climbs 20% or steeper. Past its rated slope a mower slips, stalls or leaves the steep patch uncut.
  • Maps separate lawns. Front and back lawns joined by a path or driveway need a mower that maps each one as a zone.
  • No boundary wire. You'd rather draw the boundary in an app than bury a wire around every edge.

How to choose

On a small lawn the rated area is rarely the limit, so look at how each mower knows where it is. RTK models such as Ecovacs's GOAT O600 RTK need a reference station mounted with a clear view of the sky; camera and LiDAR models such as eufy's E15 and Mammotion's YUKA mini 2 need none. If big trees shade the grass, answer yes to the shade question in the matcher and the satellite-only models drop out.

Some mowers that look right miss here. Dreame's A1 Pro is cheap for its rating but treats a second lawn as a second map with its own charging station, every Navimow shows a price on its Australian site without taking orders, and Husqvarna's entry Automower needs a boundary wire.

Questions

Should I buy a mower rated well above my lawn?

Some headroom helps. Once a lawn passes four-fifths of a mower's rated area the matcher marks it a tight fit, because the makers' figures assume the mower runs most days through the growing season.
