The cheapest model that meets every requirement

Ecovacs Deebot T80 Omni, $812

If your home isn’t the one this list assumes, the answer changes: change it in the matcher.

Hair is the job robot vacuums fail at most visibly: it wraps round the brush, fills a small bin halfway through a run, and a robot that can't recognise a pet's mess will spread it across the floor. So for a house with heavy shedders we set a list of requirements before price comes into it.

The case below is a 150 m² home with hard floors and rugs and a long-haired dog or two cats. Change any of it in the matcher and the list re-ranks.

What it has to have

  • Spinning or roller mop the dock washes. Hard floors get mopped on every run, so the mop needs scrubbing action and a dock that rinses it between rooms.
  • Mop lifts 10 mm or comes off. Rugs stay dry when the mop lifts clear of the pile or is left at the dock.
  • Suction of 10,000 Pa or more. Heavy shedding needs strong suction as well as a brush that doesn't wrap hair.
  • Dock empties the bin. Pet hair fills a robot's small onboard bin within a run or two.
  • Anti-tangle brush. Long hair wraps around a standard bristle brush and has to be cut off by hand.
  • Camera obstacle avoidance. A camera lets the robot recognise pet mess, bowls and toys; a laser alone sees only shapes.

How to choose

Start with the brush. Every model here makes an anti-tangle claim for its main brush, but the designs differ: Roborock splits its DuoDivide brush in two, Dreame blows hair off with HyperStream, Ecovacs angles the bristles in ZeroTangle. None publishes a test you can compare, so we treat the claim as a requirement, not a ranking.

Then the dock. A self-emptying dock is what makes daily runs bearable with a shedding dog: the robot's own bin holds a few hundred millilitres, the dock bag several litres. Camera avoidance is the other must-have, because it is how a robot tells a dropped sock or a pet accident from a chair leg.

Questions

Is more suction better for pet hair?

Up to a point. We ask for at least 10,000 Pa for heavy shedders, but the makers measure suction their own way and publish no common test, so a higher figure doesn't prove a cleaner floor.
